STAGE AND COSTUME DESIGN // 2019

Submission for the Scholarship “Musical Theater heute” from the Deutsche Bank Foundation.

The stage setting shows what appears to be a typical family house, one with the power of its own will to work for, or against its inhabitants. In my interpretation, Renata, the opera’s protagonist, is a victim of a traumatic and abusive childhood who continuously suffers from a loss of reality. The fiery angel is no real angel, he is the devil in person form. The house is a mixture of a place of refuge and a horrible memory. The walls and ceilings move, creating new rooms which will either crush or set the actors free.
